Palmares was opened in December 1975 is a Par 71, including 11 par 4's, three par 5's, and 4 par 3's.
The Frank Pennink designed course enjoys a beautiful location, near to the historic city of Lagos, commanding magnificent views of the bay of Lagos and the distant Monchique hills. During springtime, the fairways and hills are covered with the flowering shrubs, acacia...The Blossom from the Almond trees giving the impression of snow covered trees, lining the vivid green fairways beneath a warm springtime sun.
So, after starting out on a difficult dogleg Par 4 from a high tee, the golfer soon gets into the links which run behind Meia Praia, a great expanse of white sand and high dunes. Five of the 18 holes are situated on sand-dunes along the Atlantic coast on the Meia Praia beach. The remaining 13 holes are laid out among gently undulating hills. Hole no. 5, Stroke Index 1 is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most outstanding links hole in Europe. At hole 6, the course turns back inland in the direction of the clubhouse.
From here on the player faces just the opposite challenge, with holes designed along curving valleys bordered by pine trees, and affording beautiful views over Lagos Bay and the Monchique mountains. It is a perfect mix of links and inland golf. From the veranda of the clubhouse, set between holes 9 and 10, the view covers 25 kms of Atlantic ocean coast.
Palmares hosted in 2003, two PGA Europrotour tournaments. The first was played in June (Algarve Swing), and in October, the European Final (Tour Champions), with the best Tour 50 players. Since 2002, the qualifying School of European Seniors Tour, have been playing in Palmares.
Even the clubhouse has beautiful views and there's also a Pro shop, putting green, driving range and mobile bar.
