Silves golf
Silves is one of the latest Algarve golf courses having opened in 2006, extending 5,600metres and with a par 70, is located in a serene spot and is anything but the proverbial walk in the park. This latest course belonging to the Pestana Group is surrounded by typical Algarve fruit orchards and small farms.
The course has been designed to test the golfer's quality in hitting a well directed ball using the correct choice of club. This point is immediately emphasised as you stand on the first tee faced by two water hazards flanking the fairway. The course has been described as designed for attacking play whilst the bunkers are well placed to cause possible trouble to the "big hitters".
Silves encourages and rewards attacking play. It has a natural beauty and an elegant design. The excellent condition, all year round, is ideal for low scoring. A relentless test in precision, this course has no peers. It is the “archetype” of man-sized parkland golf.
Most holes offer a spectacular mountain and valley view, overlooking palm trees and olive groves. You may even pick a few oranges or even figs along the way to the next tee. The severity of the bunkering is enough defence against the onslaught of the games big guns
Silves, approximately 1 hour from Faro, is at the heart of one of Portugal's best citrus growing areas. It also has factories processing cork. Although now an agricultural centre, its fascination for visitors is historical. The town's two most visible buildings, its red sandstone castle and the red and white cathedral next to it, are reminders that in medieval times this was the most strongly fortified and most strenuously fought over place in the Algarve.
